HISTORY
Wellness means different things to different people. To some, wellness is opening a jar without assistance. To others, wellness is running a marathon. This spectrum of meaning is what inspired Tim and Liz Rhode to develop a new breed of health club: the Maryland Athletic Club & Wellness Center.
Together, with more than 20 years of combined experience in club management and consulting, the couple began to break new ground in the fitness industry. They were determined to merge wellness with fitness. They envisioned a thriving club with endless paths to wellness, a club that evolves along with its members. They wanted a fitness community that that would be accountable for the achievement of its members’ goals.
Tim and Liz found their ideal location in a vacant industrial building off I-83 in Timonium—a big open space at odds with most people’s idea of a quality health club. But the Rhodes aren’t most people. In 1996, their instincts transformed an inhospitable warehouse into the most comprehensive fitness and wellness center in the state of Maryland. Their vision included the establishment of on-site wellness service providers and educational programs, along with health and fitness programs of an unprecedented caliber. After eight months of renovations, the Maryland Athletic Club & Wellness Center (or the MAC, as its friends call it) opened for business on September 3, 1996. And Maryland was introduced to a truly unique perspective on health and wellness.
